We have an area behind our house that has been neglected for years. I’ve been working on all the spaces and garden beds around our home that have needed work, and this is the final area. Except for this area, everywhere else just needs maintenance.
Trees had started to grow in the area, so the first steps started with removal of weeds and trees.
You could barely see the old bricks stacked here between tiers.
This area is a big slope so many years ago my husband put wooden frames in, and I laid bricks on them to form short walls to separate the tiers. The bricks were not locked together, just stacked.
After the brush removal, I cleaned out the inside of the of the wooden frames and my husband helped mix concrete. I plastered the inside of the frames with the concrete to make a flat surface. Using construction adhesive, I glued the bricks together this time. It was the easiest way that I’ve ever laid bricks.
My husband built wooden retaining walls to insert between the brick dividers to hold the dirt in each section. He drilled holes in the wood to insert re-bar, and hammered them about a foot into the ground. I added concrete under the wooden walls to hold in the fill dirt. I laid cardboard before the fill dirt, and another layer of cardboard on top of the fill dirt to prevent weeds from growing. The final layer you see in the picture below is mulch.

Vego beds. The beds need some more tweaking before I add garden soil. This area is in front of a south facing wall. My plan is to use these with a cover to create cold frames for growing cold weather crops in the winter.

As with all things we do — Proverbs 16:9 plays out in life. This verse says, “A Man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” (NKJV) Our steps were changed throughout the project, because that is just what happens when you are trying to find solutions for old problems.
