A friend who knows me well, surprised me with this devotional one day, out of the blue. I was so excited! And I have to say, this is one of the best devotionals I’ve ever owned. If you are a gardener or even if you just love to see gardens and flowers, this will be a wonderful devotional for you to own.
I love knowing something about the author and you will find in the author page at the back of the book that Beth is a “writer, speaker, photographer, and horticulturist with a degree in ornamental horticulture from Clemson University.” She has had years of experience as a Bible teacher and “combines her knowledge of horticulture with rich biblical truths to help others become rooted in Christ, cultivate joy, and sow grace.” “She has worked at local garden centers, taught gardening workshops and classes, and worked as a garden consultant and designer.” (see page 137)
This devotional contains 60 Daily Devotions that are divided into sections:
- Each devotion starts with a Bible verse.
- Then commentary and application.
- Followed by a Prayer section.
- A Digging Deeper section that gives a deeper understanding of the scripture and how it applies to you.
- And ends with Over The Garden Fence where Beth gives you tips to help you in your gardens.
Each morning after I read a portion of my Bible, I end my morning time with one of the devotions. Some days I can’t stop myself, and I read more than one. There is such a sweet calm that comes over me as I look at Beth’s beautiful pictures and take in the meaning of the scripture she is teaching about. And, I have already put some of her garden tips into practice.
One of my favorite devotionals from the book was titled “Show Me” on pages 24-25. The verse that went with that day was: “Even a child is known by his deeds.” (Proverbs 20:11 NKJV)
Beth starts the commentary with this quote from Alfred Austin, “Show me your garden, and I shall tell you who you are.”
Beth goes on to say, “…the Master Gardener reminds us that others can tell who we are by what they see in us. If ‘even a child is known by his deeds,’ how much more are we as adults known by our deeds?…We’re walking testimonies, either of God’s grace or of our self-centeredness… People do watch and know more about you than you realize.” (pp. 24-25)
This was the prayer for that day:
Lord, help me remember that others are watching me and my actions and that I need to show others I’m Yours through my deeds.
You can find this devotional at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Target. It is not only a helpful devotional for anyone, but would make a wonderful gift for an avid gardener. I highly recommend it.
I also want to end today’s blog with a heartfelt thank you to those who have given their lives for our freedoms in America. I pray you have a wonderful Memorial Day celebration as you think of all those brave ones who have fought for us.
