I don’t know about you, but I get very nostalgic this time of year. It’s the back-to-school shopping thing that does it. I have loved this time of year since childhood.
Hope is in the air. School is back in session. It’s a new start with a lot of learning potential. Even if you didn’t do well last year, this is a whole new year.
Fresh starts.
And the shopping for pencils, neat pens, colorful notebooks, new clothes. I didn’t mention back packs.
I’m showing my age, because when I went to school we had a large notebook that we stacked our books on top of—large book at the bottom ending with the smallest book on top. We carried them in front of us, tight against our chest—like a hug. If they were really tall, we balanced them under our chin. I still feel like hugging my books today, because books—they’re just the greatest.
**(As for the book bags, according to AI, backpacks were first invented for hiking. These packs became popular “in the late 1960s and early 1970s—to carry books. By the 1980s, companies began designing packs specifically for students.”)
In a way, even at my age, I can still get the back to school feeling. I have two new Bible studies starting up in the fall. I will need supplies for them. And I want to look cute, when I go to them. Cute is inspiring. Looking like you came in your pajamas is not.
So a friend of mine and I went back-to-school clothes shopping for ourselves on Friday. (Thanks for a fun time, Shannon!) Talk about nostalgia! The clothes I wore in high school are back in style this year.
And,
all the fun of trying on clothes to see if they work. Looking for bargains. Now is the best time to shop for clothes with all the back-to-school sales and summer clearance.
I have updated my wardrobe with buys from Cato, Walmart, consignment stores, Amazon, and Old Navy.
In July, I was traveling to Thomasville on Sundays to help out with my 92 year old dad. Thomasville’s Walmart was putting racks of summer clearance clothes up near the checkout area each Sunday. I found a dress, and two sweaters. See one of the sweaters below.

It had a clearance price of $9.00 but it rung up as $5.00. It was a knock off of a famous brand and my granddaughter saw its look alike for $220 at a consignment shop in Hickory, N.C.
Another great buy I found were these flowered, flare leg jeans from Cato. They are very comfortable and I had this top that I thrifted a few years ago. It went perfectly with them.

Old Navy had some great back-to-school sales going on and their clothes look exactly like what I wore to High School years ago.
I have enjoyed getting style ideas from a mother/daughter duo that put outfits together from Walmart brands. Their channel is called Fouts Lane. Their goal is to help women find “outfit ideas that are affordable, but still cute!” In their videos, they include the top, bottoms, dresses, shoes, purses, and jewelry that goes with each outfit. I will link their latest fall Walmart haul below. They are fun to watch and tell all the details about what is modest, how it fits, and how the fabric feels. They are Christians and give a shout out at the end of each video about knowing Jesus being the most important thing.

They post every Tuesday evening if you are wanting to get a jump on seasonal fashions.
